Letters to and from, or regarding Nikola Tesla

September 29th, 1899 letter from Nikola Tesla to George Scherff

Colorado Springs, Sept. 29, 1899

My dear Mr. Scherff,

A disappointment, which I may not in the least prepared to hear, and which I feel keenly, compels me to write about, a matter which I would pass in silence if it were possible. You have probably received my letter about Mr. Loewenstein and you know what I have thought of his honesty and character. Imagine my astonishment and pain.

When, through a singular accident, a dispatch got into my hands, addressed to him, from which it was plain that he was not truthful to me when he left. If I would have any doubts in this regard they would have been dispelled by his message which I received to-day, and in which he asks my consent! to his leaving for home when long ago he had all arranged to this effect. Really, I cannot understand this, and it is difficult for me to believe that he is anything but true and honorable, despite all evidence to the contrary. Often it happens that circumstances are against a man, and I hope that this may be the case in this instance, and that I have not made an experience similar to that I made before with an assistant when I worked on some ideas on compressed air. Tell Mr. Loewenstein that if he has been untruthful with me, I forgive him, and wish him the best with all my heart.

It would have given me great pleasure to comply with his request were it not for the circumstances which I deplore and which are probably more hurtful to me than to him. If he desires a certificate, I authorize you to give him one in the capacity of my secretary. I gladly give him the credit that he has, to all appearances, striven hard to do what he could. He was at his post from early morning till late at night and everything that I have seen of him made me believe that he was a thorough gentleman. He has shown a keen intelligence in many matters, though he was very deficient in practical and general knowledge. A good certificate expressed in a general way should be given to him. Do not forget that he leaves of his own accord and free of all obligation.

Yours sincerely,
N. Tesla

P. S. Please send a little help to Mr. __ lady, whose letter I have overlooked. You will know how far to go. I can not be generous just now. I am progressing with the work satisfactorily.
