Dinner to Lord Kelvin

Given by Anthony N. Brady — New York the Only Earthly Spot That Mars Sees.

New York, May 9 — Mars, the planet, has cut out London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, South Africa, the Philippines, and all the rest of the world, in fact, and is signalling only to New York. That eminent scientist, Lord Kelvin, said last night. This is the result of his recent investigations in the United States. He made this announcement at a banquet given in his honor at Delmonico's by Anthony N. Brady.

"There was no electric lighting practically in New York in 1896, and Mars had not begun to signal," said Lord Kelvin, "but Edison brought out his lamp here in New York and the whole world was lit."

"New York is the most marvelously lighted city in the world. New York is the only spot on this earth that Mars sees. Mars signalling only to New York. That planet cannot see anything else, and over our way in London it is almost the same way.

"My visit in this country has been short, but Lady Kelvin and I have seen wonders in that which records scientific progress. You are carrying out here in this land the words of the seers and prophets and realizing them.

"Look at this great city, the one that Mars is signalling to, lighted by the single turning of a switch, operated from one power house, and like Liberty lighting the world. My visit has been short, but most pleasant. I cannot tell you of all the wonders and delights that have been crowded into it. I am very happy to have been able to visit America again, and no doubt this is my last trip. God bless you."

Assembled to meet Lord and Lady Kelvin were those which the toastmaster, T. C. Martin, described as the "captains of Industry." Edison was there and Tesla and most of the leaders and managers of the telegraph and electro-transportation companies of New York and Boston.

Before the banquet Lord Kelvin, who calls for home to-morrow, visited the Riverside station of the New York Edison Company.
