Tesla and His Neighbors

Nikola Tesla, who has an experimental plant down on Long Island near Wardenclyffe, is giving his neighbors the “hype.” Among the many contrivances Mr. Tesla has fitted up is a tall tower with several poles stationed around it. For some time there have been sent up from these poles and towers, at night, the most brilliant and fantastic streaks of electricity that shoot off heavenward as if trying to reach another world. Perhaps that’s what Mr. Tesla is trying to do, communicate with some other sphere, for he will not disclose the nature of his experiments any more than to say they are along the line of telegraphy and telephony. Some day, he says, the public will know all about it. All the neighbors can do meanwhile is to sit out on their porches open-mouthed, and wonder and shiver at the ghoulish lights the wizard Tesla sends out on their mysterious errands.
