The Hungarian Electrician Has Been Experimenting in Colorado and Says He Will Transmit Wireless Messages From New York to Paris.
Special Dispatch to Democrat and Chronicle.
Denver, Jan. 14. — Nikola Tesla proposes to telegraph from New York to his laboratory in Paris, without the use of wires. He arrived yesterday from Colorado Springs, where he has been working secretly for eight months, and announced that he had perfected a system of wireless telegraphy vastly superior to that of Marconi. He will spend the next six weeks in testing the device by sending messages from New York to Paris. He left for New York last night. Said Mr. Tesla to-day:
“I did not come to Colorado for my health, although most persons, judging from my sallow complexion and delicate frame, think I am a consumptive. I came here to learn the effect of dry air and high altitude upon the machine I have perfected for the transmission of power without the use of wires. I have been successful beyond my fondest hopes. I am not at liberty to make public the details of the process. During the next six weeks, I shall devote my time to sending messages by the machine from my laboratory in New York to Paris, where I have another laboratory, in which the messages will be received.
“The benefits of such a machine during a battle at sea cannot be estimated. Electricity is the power which will be used in future to fire guns, and my machine will aid in doing deadly work. The beauty of my machine is that it can transmit power over several thousands of miles without wires. Now the Marconi system is useless at a distance of more than 100 miles. Again, any telegraph operator can read a message in transit by the Marconi system. It is impossible to do this when my machine is used. I expect to send messages to Paris during the exposition there this year.
“Any defects noticed during the tests in New York in the next few days will be remedied. I shall spend six weeks or so in New York, and then shall return to Colorado to continue my experiments.”
Tesla’s assistants, Alley, a photographer, and Czito, a scientist, went to New York several weeks ago.
