Noted English Scientist Declares Europe Plods Along in Our Wake.
New York, April 28. — Lord Kelvin, the noted English scientist, says that Europe is plodding in America’s wake. Lord and Lady Kelvin were given a reception last night at Columbia University. Thomas A. Edison and Nikola Tesla were among the guests. His Lordship praised Marconi and expressed the belief that he would undoubtedly circle the world with his wireless system.
“The greatest development of the transmission of power has taken place in America,” Lord Kelvin continued. “It has been so great, so marvelous, that I hope to live to see the day when a dream I have ever had, may be realized. I fervently hope to see the day when we shall have the transmission of electric power over 300 miles with a voltage of 40,000. When I first talked of this fifteen years ago, I was scoffed at, but with the wonderful transmission of power at Niagara Falls my dream looks to be near fulfillment.
“American enterprise in science has accomplished far more than any other nation. Others stop where you but begin to work. In Europe we plod along in your wake and copy your advancement by taking advantage of your progress.”
