Doctors in Convention - Electro-Therapeutic Association Begins Its Sessions in the Library
The eighth annual convention of the American Electro-Therapeutic Association was called to order in the rooms of the society of Natural Sciences in the Library building this forenoon.
Although the attendance at this morning's session was small, it is expected that fully 100 men, who stand high in the medical profession in this country, will be here before night. They are coming on trains from the four points of the compass.
About 25 members were present in the Library building when Dr. Charles Rea Dickson of Toronto, president of the association, rapped for order at 10:30. He briefly announced the purpose of the association and outlined the important features of the meeting. Rev. O. P. Gifford of the Delaware Avenue Baptist Church was then introduced and delivered an eloquent prayer. The reading of the minutes of the last meeting was dispensed with and the report of the executive council was submitted by President Dickson.
On motion of Dr. William T. Bishop of Washington the privileges of the floor were extended to all members of the medical profession. Mayor Diehl was introduced and extended a warm welcome to the visitors. He spoke of the rapid strides that had been made in the growth and development of electrical treatment for disease. He referred to the way electricity was operating the street cars of this city and advised the visiting physicians to inspect the plant of the Buffalo Railway Company. Dr. Bishop responded to the Mayor's welcome in fitting terms. Guests were then introduced. Dr. Henry McClure of Cromer, England; Dr. Holland of Hot Springs, Dr. A. D. Rockwell of New York and other physicians of note were presented and made short remarks... Letters were read from Dr. Georges Apostoli of Paris, Dr. Felice La Torre of Rome, Dr. Georges Gautier of Paris and several others, expressing their regret at being unable to attend the meeting.
Reports of committees were then presented and discussed. Dr. Margaret A. Cleaves read the report of the committee on meters, Dr. Dickson the report from the committee on electrodes, John. J. Carty of New York the report on electric light apparatus for X rays.
Several physicians who were scheduled to read papers were not present and are expected later in the session. Dr. Cleaves read an interesting report on "Phlebitis; A Clinical Study." This afternoon several other papers will be read. Dr. Apostoli has sent a paper on "New Uses of the Sinusoidal Current in Gynaecology," Dr. La Torre on "Electricity in the Treatment of Uterine Fibromata," and Dr. Gautier on "Electro-Therapeutics in Gynaecology." These papers will be read by a member of the association.
Tonight a reception will be given at the University of Buffalo. Addresses will be delivered by Dr. Henry R. Hopkins, Dr. O. P. Gifford, Dr. Wende and others.
