With two such genius of the electrical [world?] as Edison and Tesla hard at work the artificial light problem it is highly probable that within a year or more will be ample and inexpensive supply of portable sunlight, predicts Washington Star. Tesla has done much to simplify, cheapen and improve incandescent electric lighting; [his] latest invention on that line being [of] itself to establish his fame [as a] practical thinker. Edison, however, has gone much farther; he has [dis]covered the cathode rays and has [used] it in a way which makes it quite [prob]able that the newly discovered [light?] it will soon be within reach of the [public?]. If the process is not captured [by] a corporation now in the illuminating business it is likely to render [entire]ly unnecessary any coal at all in [bring]ing about reductions in the price of [coal] and the electric light as we now [know?] it. One of the most extraordinary phases of the situation is the astonished calmness with which the people generally receive the announcement of what would, not so long ago, have been universally regarded as miracles. If an air ship were to [com]mence operations next week the [mat]ter of expressions of surprise [w]ould be too small to take [notice] of. [We] expect the wonderful and the [un]expected if we do not get it.
