Brilliant Social Event In Wedding at Newport.

SOCIETY ATTENDS IN FORCE

Bride Daughter of the Late Augustus Whiting of New York, and Groom Son of the Late Theodore A. Havemeyer.

Newport, R. I., July 11. — The principal social event of the season here thus far was the wedding of Mr. Harry O. Havemeyer, Jr., and Miss Charlotte Whiting, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Augustus Whiting of New York.

The families of both the bride and groom are well known summer residents in Newport. The bride is a granddaughter of Judge Swan of Ohio, and the groom is the youngest son of the late Theodore A. Havemeyer and nephew of Mrs. Charles M. Oelrichs.

Miss Lily Oelrichs and Miss Natica Rives, daughter of Mrs. George L. Rives, at whose summer home, Swanhurst, on Bellevue avenue, the ceremony took place, were bridesmaids.

Rev. William R. Meehan, pastor of St. Mary’s church, officiated, and the guests included all the prominent members of the Newport summer colony.

The bride was given away by her uncle, George L. Rives. She carried a shower bouquet of orange blossoms and lilies of the valley, festooned with white silk ribbon streamers. In her hair was a magnificent tiara of five large diamond suns, the groom’s gift.

The best man was Fred C. Havemeyer, brother of the groom, and the ushers were Howard Bissell of Brooklyn and J. H. McCormick of Chicago, classmates of Mr. Havemeyer at Yale.

A wedding breakfast and reception followed the ceremony, all the guests being placed on the lawn, save that of the bride, which was on the veranda. The reception was held under a large marquee. The floral decorations were very beautiful, the prevailing choice being roses and jasmine. The wedding was a most auspicious affair and was attended by all the members of the exclusive set. A guest of honor was Baron von Hengelmuller, the Austrian minister.

Mr. and Mrs. Havemeyer started, after the wedding breakfast, on their honeymoon, which will last for a year. They will go abroad in a few days and visit Paris, all the Mediterranean ports and Japan, returning to New York early next spring.

The wedding gifts, conservatively estimated at over $100,000, were not displayed, but were taken as they arrived and deposited in the vaults of a local bank.

The district messenger lad was utilized by Nikola Tesla in sending his remembrance to Mr. Havemeyer. A. D. T. No. 5002 arrived here from New York in a bright new uniform and delivered to Mr. Havemeyer at his hotel a piece of silver plate from the electrical wizard.
