Kiting at the Stars

Pittsburg Dispatch.

Mr. Tesla has no exclusive property in the electrical signals which come to the earth from the far-away regions of space. Several other scientific gentlemen have been receiving messages. The latest to announce is William A. Eddy, the man who has done more to harness the kite to work than any other since Ben Franklin’s time. Years ago Mr. Eddy improved the kite and adapted it to photography and meteorological observations. He had it adopted into the army and the weather bureau with advantage to both. More recently Mr. Eddy has been flying his kite at the evening stars, trying to connect with the music of the spheres. As to the music he is silent, but he avers that he has several times received electrical signals from space which he is satisfied were sent by the inhabitants of some other planet in the solar system. Mr. Eddy, like unto Mr. Tesla, was unable to interpret the messages and made no attempt to reply as Mr. Tesla did. But he continues kiting, thinking and wondering at Bayonne, and is not afraid to say what he thinks. Meantime the world is beginning to get interested, and is speculating in its own uninformed way whether there may not be greater wireless systems than those of Marconi and Fessenden.
