Tesla and the Martians

MR. TESLA, if he has not already opened correspondence with the inhabitants of Mars, has received communications from them and expects before long to establish an interchange of intelligence with those enterprising people. It has been suspected for some time that the Martians were sending messages to the earth, but until now no one has been able to catch them. The Martians, it is surmised, are more advanced than we in twentieth century science and our clumsy apparatus did not respond to the etherial waves which they set in motion.

Naturally it is Mr. Tesla who has first among us attained the Martian development. He has recently invented a method for the transmission of power through the atmosphere without mechanical aids, and had gone to Colorado to perfect it. It is well known that there is a great deal of energy lying around loose, in the sun. the earth and the other planets. Tesla is going to gather this up and deliver it wherever needed, thus dispensing with all our present cumbersome machinery. The apparatus designed for this purpose is necessarily very sensitive, and the other day, as Tesla was experimenting, he found that it was responding to other than terrestrial influences. It was, in short, receiving signals, and while he has not yet had time to work out the code, he has no doubt that these signals were sent from Mars, and that he will eventually decipher them and be able to return them.

Mr. Tesla is thus on the very eve of a discovery even more remarkable than the many others on whose eve he has been so often and so long. It may be asserted confidently that if any one on earth can understand the language of Mars it is Tesla, and conversely, that if any one can understand Tesla, it must be an inhabitant of Mars. And this is only the beginning of the twentieth century.
