The Long Island landmark on the North Shore at Shoreham, east of Port Jefferson, between Miller’s Place and Wading River, known as Tesla’s Tower, has disappeared and will no longer serve to guide yachtsmen on the Sound. It was erected several years ago by Nikola Tesla, who conducted wireless and other electrical experiments there. The structure contained no metal save in the top, or observation platform, which had a peculiar shape and was readily recognizable from great distances when there was no fog. It stood almost directly across the ... regarded as a test of eyesight to pick it out from East Rock or from West Rock, the resort places of the Connecticut city. The structure was blown up by dynamite early this month, as the lease of the site on which it stood had expired. Standing as it did on high ground it could often be seen above low-lying fogs and so was useful as a mariner’s guide on Long Island Sound, there being no lighthouse nearer than that at Old Field Point west of Port Jefferson.
