Teslian (Tesla-International) - March 1st, 1955

Attention is called to the May issue of Power magazine (McGraw-Hill). An editorial, "Strange Genius," by Louis N. Rowley, is intended to arouse interest in plans for a national Tesla centennial observance in 1956. The article traces introduction of Tesla's polyphase system, heralded as the most tremendous event in all engineering history.

Mr. Rowley answers the question, why, in view of Tesla's important contributions, did he fail of the comparative popularity won by Edison and Bell? In closing, Rowley suggests: "Next year — July 10, 1956 — will be the 100th anniversary of Nikola Tesla's birth. It would be fitting for our engineering societies to commemorate this occasion, to acknowledge our debt to this strange and lonely genius who changed our world for the better."

A Tesla commemorative stamp has been urged and a petition will be sent Postmaster General Arthur E. Summerfield requesting it. Enclosed with this issue is a sheet to be signed by members and friends of the Tesla Society which will be bound with others to form the petition. An addressed envelope is attached for return. If you know someone interested have him sign, too.

Of interest in connection with Mr. Rowley's editorial, a Westinghouse representative recently cited the company's colorful history: the significant part it played in industrial and technological development, the many outstanding figures in electrical progress associated with the company. Recalling an incident of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, the Westinghouse Co., under leadership of George Westinghouse, was awarded the contract to supply its electric power. The Tesla system was to be given its first demonstration.

Westinghouse conferred with his engineers and designers, and with usual directness presented the task. Never before had
