182 HIGH FREQUENCY APPARATUS is far more important, a fairly intimate knowledge of the apparatus being built, may be said to constitute the quali fications for success. In order that the latter qualification may be obtained, it is suggested that the prospective builder diligently consult every book pertaining to the subject that he can lay his hands on. These books may be numbered on the fingers of one hand, and when one has assimilated their entire contents, there is still a good deal to learn on the subject. But every iota of knowledge helps, particularly in the theoretical end, which does not necessarily mean the mathematical end. Probably the less mathematics the practical builder tampers with, the better he will be off, for the actual design of the apparatus has been spared him. What he needs is a good, sound knowledge of the characteristics of the high frequency current, and this may be quite readily obtained from a few good books. With knowledge and a fair equipment of tools, let him start in with what will probably prove to be the most interesting and fascinating work he has ever attempted.
