The Adriatic Sea washes our shore from the Albanian to the Italian border, stretching about 800 km. It also laps the coast of the rocky Lika, which the Velebit mountain largely shields from the sea.
The coastline of the Adriatic Sea is also beautiful and intricate. From it rise steep and high mountain ranges. From the coast, one can see the most enchanting natural beauties: the blue sea surface, sometimes smooth as a mirror, sometimes covered with huge waves, and the blue sky that seems to merge in the distance with the blueness of the sea. All this, as well as the rocky coastal regions of our Homeland, where the air is always fresh, the sun always gentle, and the water cold, attracts people even from the most remote corners. Therefore, thousands of visitors from many countries, most from our Homeland, come daily to the shores of our Adriatic Sea, to bathe there, enjoy its incomparable beauties, and most of all to rest and recuperate their health. Even Nikola Tesla, in his younger years, recuperated and enjoyed the beauties of our Adriatic.
Lika, the region where Smiljan and Plitvice Lakes lie
Lika is a basin between Velebit, Velika and Mala Kapela, and Plješevica. This entire region is hilly and rocky, making it one of our poorest regions.
