Attractive 200-Mile Tour Around Long Island

During the sultry July days, roads that stretch through verdant countrysides and reach the refreshing coolness of the sea, are eagerly sought by the motorist desiring relief from the parched air of the city.

An attractive run of 200 miles through the most charming sections of Long Island through Babylon along the Great South Bay and the ocean, to Good Ground; and returning along Great Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound, through Port Jefferson, Oyster Bay and Roslyn; a trip that passes magnificent estates, parks, country clubs, woods, fields and seashore; over hard smooth roads; and which will prove generally invigorating and refreshing, has been prepared by the Bureau of Tours of the Automobile Club of America.

The route picked out down and back covers roads that give the best running conditions at the present time. Leaving by way of the Queensboro or 59th Street Bridge, the motorist follows the Queens Boulevard through Elmhurst and Forest Hills, on past Maple Grove Cemetery. A little beyond the cemetery one leaves the trolley line and makes a left turn into Hillside avenue, which is followed through Jamaica, past the Peace Monument, turn right into the Queens road, cross the trolley tracks, make a left turn, then a right one, following the trolley tracks across the rallroad and continue along Hempstead avenue, following, the trolley tracks into Hempstead. After crossing the railroad follow the trolley tracks until they bear right. Leave the track and after crossing Main st. continue on the Bethpage turnpike. Cross a railroad track then bear right into Farmingdale road, which is followed into Babylon.

From there the South Country road is followed through Brightwaters, Bay Shore, Islip, East Islip, Oakdale, Sayville (where there is a wireless station), and Bayport to Patchogue — 58 miles from New York.

After leaving Patchogue one bears right, then under a railroad, on through East Patchogue, Bellport, Brookhaven, Moriches, Center Moriches and East Moriches. In this section there is a posted detour which must be followed. From Eastport continue on through Westhampton. Quogue. East Quogue and Good Ground. Here the return trip starts with a swing back along the north shore.

Outside Good Ground, at the lumber yard, turn right and run through Flanders to Riverhead, from where the Middle Country road is followed a short way. Then make a right turn and run through Wading River and Shoreham, where the Tesla Wireless Station is located. Then continue on through Miller Place, Mount Sinai, Port Jefferson and East Setauket, where one passes a large sign reading “To New York.” Then on through Stony Brook, Smithtown Branch, Smithtown and Commack.

Beyond Commack at the yellow house turn right and run into East Northport, pass the cemetery, turn left and cross the railroad tracks and continue on through Centerport into Huntington. where there is some road work going on that will necesitate a detour. Bear right, through Cold Spring Harbor, then left to the Fire station; then right on North Hempstead turnpike, past the cemetery. Then make the right turn for Oyster Bay and follow the West Shore Drive across the bridge to Bayville.

If one elects to follow the north shore closely from Bayville, the run is on through Matinecock to Locust Valley, Glen Cove, Sea Cliff and Roslyn.

Then the North Hempstead Turnpike is followed through Roslyn, just outside of which town care should be taken due to the turns in the road. After Roslyn comes Manhasset, Little Neck, Douglaston, Bayside and Flushing. From here Jackson avenue is followed to the Queensboro or 59th street bridge thence to Brooklyn or Manhattan. — Eagle.
