Electricity Without Heat

Nikola Tesla Says the Carbon Demonstrations of Mr. Case Are Not New.

Willard E. Case's announcement before the New York Electrical Society at Columbia College that he can produce electricity from carbon without heat has caused some stir among the men who are devoting their time to the development of electricity.

He cited the fact that the generation of energy through heat involves a waste of more than 75 per cent, and that all electricity except that produced by water power or galvanic battery is obtained ultimately from carbon.

Nikola Tesla was seen to-day and asked what his views were concerning Mr. Case's new road to electricity.

"The process of converting the energy of combining carbon and oxygen with electricity without any loss in the battery is not new," he said, "It has been observed that In the process there is no weakening of temperature shown, consequently there seems to be no loss in heat.

"In my opinion this does not show at all there is no loss in reaching a combination. On the contrary, I am convinced that the second law of thermo-dynamics is far more general than it is believed to be. As long, however, as we contine ourselves to developing energy by consuming material we are adhering to barbarous processes which imply destruction and waste.

"I only need mention the conversion of the energs of falling of falling water and the transmission of the electrical energy to a distance. This process is highly economical, much more so In practice, than a perfect battery would be. although in the latter case the conversion seems to be perfected without any loss."
