Marconi After Signal Sites

Proposed Wireless Telegraph Stations on the New England and Nova Scotia Coasts.

Signor Marconi, the wireless telegrapher, arrived yesterday aboard the White Star liner Majestic, from Liverpool and Queenstown. He expects to stay in America a month and will visit the New England coast and Nova Scotia to find sites for receiving stations for his aerial system.

He says he has equipped twenty-eight British, four Belgian and three German warships with signalling and receiving plants. He declares that a vessel fitted with his apparatus can signal 200 miles.

The North German Lloyd steamship Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse is equipped with the Marconi system and there will be a special room aboard the line’s new swift steamship Kronprinz Wilhelm, which will be in commission next September, for signalling through space.

Mr. Gustav H. Schwab of the North German Lloyd suggests that the Government might put a receiving station on the Nantucket Shoal lightship, and another, communicating with it, on the nearest point of land connecting by cable with the mainland. By this means New York might hear of the appearance of liners ten hours before Fire Island sighted them.

In regard to Tesla’s declaration that he soon will be able to communicate with Europe without wires, Marconi said:

“I do not see why that may not be accomplished in time. The possibilities of the field are almost infinite.”
