New Invention - Wizard Edison Expects to Soon Astonish the World

It is reported that Edison, the electrical wizard, is at work upon a new invention which, if it prove a success, will entirely outdo everything he has placed before the world heretofore. His scheme is to render communication between points on the surface of the earth thousands of miles apart possible without the use of any of the appliances known to science, not even a wire. His plan is reported to be as follows: Your friend in Europe carries a small machine of the new invention, an instrument about the size of a watch, and you carry one in America. If you wish to communicate with your friend abroad you take out the instrument, the needle of which is in electric sympathy with the instrument he carries. The needle oscillates like that of a compass, and when you ascertain the direction in which it points you look in that direction and just think—think hard, that is all. It is alleged that Edison claims that the mechanism of this instrument is so delicate that it will respond in short order to this current of thought. Of course there is not one person in a thousand who will believe that such a thing as contemplated is possible, but who is there who will dare to defy Edison and his lightning? If Edison makes a wire talk why can he not make the air talk as well? We should like to hear an expression of opinion on this subject from Nikola Tesla.
