Electric Power Industry of Serbia (EPS) and Children with Nikola Tesla

More than 20.000 children, who said for Nikola Tesla that “Nidza is super”, “the master of lightning” and that “they are proud to be of the same parentage as the world’s greatest genius”, took part in the event called EPS AND CHILDREN - TESLA 150 in the period from April to the end of June...

In the year in which the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great inventor Nikola Tesla is celebrated around the world, the Electric Power Industry of Serbia organized the second successive event EPS AND CHILDREN. This time the main personality is Nikola Tesla, the character and work of which is introduced, through a series of specially organized projects, to thousands of children from around Serbia. EPS also organized, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the art competition, which will be followed by the literary one in autumn, under the shared name “Tesla - the Magic Tale of Electricity”. Being the general sponsor, EPS supported “the birth” and then “the life” of the project by the Blumen Group from Belgrade - interesting association in the Museum of Nikola Tesla in Belgrade, theatre play for children “Tesla - the Magic Tale of Electricity” and multimedia educative CD about “the Wonderful World of Energy”. All these events have become a part of the National Program for celebration of this jubilee, which means that they deserved to bear the official logotype of the state on the basis of their quality.

EPS supported, as a sponsor as well, the project by the British Council called ALSET CARDS (ALSET or TESLA cards), in which children get together and learn about Nikola Tesla and electric energy by playing cards. The NGO “Decje Srce (Child’s Heart)” is also included in the event EPS AND CHILDREN - TESLA 150, which takes care of the children with special needs and their introduction into the normal life.

- The words of children in the Visitors’ Book in the Museum of Nikola Tesla make all of us, who are employed in EPS, happy. Nikola Tesla is for our children “Nidza”, he is a “miracle”, “genius”, “super”, “the master of lightning”. They are, as it was written, “proud to be a part of the nation of which Nikola Tesla was part as well”, lays satisfactorily emphasis on it Momchilo Cebalovic, Public Relations Division director in the Electric Power Industry of Serbia.

- We have received 7707 paintings from 711 schools for the art competition during the month of May. These are only selected works, which means that there were more children who painted the Magic Tale of Electricity, says Cebalovic. Children from Kosovo and Metohija have also taken part in the competition, who practically cannot see their “Magic Tale of Electricity” due to permanent reductions in electric power supply. For them the electric power is really a tale of magic.

First, 60 authors were awarded after the first selection (EPS gave each author a home cinema as a gift), and then a special expert jury selected the best 10. They received digital photo cameras.

The play “Tesla - the Magic Tale of Electricity” came upon the stage light in April. The play was realized thanks to the Blumen Group agency from Belgrade and the Bogavac sisters: Milena - the dramaturge and Jelena - the director of the play. This is the first and the only play, for the time being, which is intended for children and, at the same time, deals with the deed of Nikola Tesla.

The play has been seen not only by the children from Belgrade, but by the children from all parts of Serbia as well, who were selected to be the guests of EPS, and it has been played not only at the theatre, but at the thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla” in Obrenovac, in the vicinity of Belgrade. Moreover, the play went on a journey to many provinces of Serbia, and it has been seen by children from Nis, Leskovac, Zajecar, Vranje, Kraljevo, Novi Sad, Pirot, Negotin, Kladovo, Kostolac, Pozarevac, Uzice, Bajina Basta and Nova Varos. Altogether - from 15 towns.

Within the scope of this event, the Museum of Nikola Tesla in Belgrade opened its secret chambers for 5th to 8th grade primary school students. With a specially designed program by the Blumen Group agency, with animators and demonstrators from the Museum, the life of the great scientist was conjured up in an attractive manner to the students from: Kostolac, Pozarevac, Smederevo, Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Novi Sad, Lazarevac, Kladovo and Backa Palanka. By each exhibit, written document, the young visitors could hear interesting stories from the life of Nikola Tesla. The demonstrators from the Museum made efforts to conjure up “live” the experiments of the famous scientist, by setting to work the transformer designed according to the Tesla’s principle.

The event EPS AND CHILDREN - TESLA 150 got its hero this year - Nikola Tesla, as well as the new visual identity and it can pride itself on the site within the site!!

Starting with March 3, on the site of the Electric Power Industry of Serbia: www.eps.co.yu there is a special site intended only for children (and for those who feel as such). This site has become “live” thanks to its animations, gifs, bulbs, sound... All information regarding the event EPS AND CHILDREN - TESLA 150 can be found on these pages. The data are updated on a daily basis. Visit the site, and you will certainly find something interesting and intriguing.

Multimedia CD is intended for primary school students, which will unveil in an interesting way many secrets on “electricity”. Apart from the “educative” part, there are some games on the CD which will intrigue the imagination of each child.

- Along with the words of admiration which were written down by children, some numbers should be mentioned as well, which are but definite facts. Some 8.000 children took part in the art competition, about 7.000 of them saw the play, and about 1.000 visited the thermal power plant and the Museum. As far as the ALSET CARDS competition is concerned, some 5.000 children participated. The children shall be given 7.000 educative CDs as a gift. We have engaged, says Cebalovic proudly, during the period of three months, through getting together with Nikola Tesla, more than 20.000 boys and girls from every part of Serbia. And this is only the beginning. Our magic tale of Tesla and electricity, which belongs to all of us, will be continued in autumn. Of course, a lot of gifts and promotion material on Tesla will be given to every child. In this way, Nikola Tesla has become a new, not discovered so far, hero of our children. No one in the world has in this way treated the world’s greatest scientist before, nor has any scientist, as far as I know, approached children in this manner.

Every Child Is Our Child!

The support given by the Electric Power Industry of Serbia to the NGO “Decje Srce” (“Child’s Heart”), which takes care of the children with special needs, has lasted for several years. This year, after the agreement is reached with the NGO experts and after the entire program of EPS dedicated to Nikola Tesla has been analyzed, the decision was made - these children will also have the opportunity to get together with Nikola Tesla.

The realization of the plan, which was carefully designed in aforesaid cooperation, started by paying a visit to the Museum of Nikola Tesla and the Thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla” in Obrenovac. Everything went perfect.

The greatest impression on the children, during the visit to the Museum, left the experiment in which, after the transformer was set to work, the bulbs - neon lights in their hands started to flash.

At the Thermal power plant “Nikola Tesla” in Obrenovac, the children saw for the first time the largest “factory” of electric power in the Balkans: they asked questions and listened carefully to each answer.

This visit has removed another barrier and prejudice regarding the children with special needs, who used this opportunity to show that they can be happy and have interests just like any other child.

A special “petite” art competition was organized during the month of June, and the best authors will be awarded in July. They will receive the same awards as other children. No differences whatsoever.

We have a coloring book in preparation, on dangers regarding the electric power, which is specially designed for them. Special programs of association and education will be organized for these children in autumn as well.
