The honorary degree of doctor of laws (LL. D.) was conferred upon George William Hill, a graduate of Rutgers College in 1859, who has made a worldwide reputation by his studies of the mathematical theories of celestial motions. Similar degrees were conferred upon Judge E. Henry Lacombe, of the United States Circuit Court, and Nikola Tesla, the famous electrician.
