Dear Uncle,
I have just now received your letter. I need not tell you that I am immeasurably saddened, though I console myself as much as I can. I had long foreseen this sorrowful event, yet the blow was heavy. I always hoped that Mother would live a long time yet, for she was strong, and both my success and yours greatly strengthened her.

I was very sorry that we were unable to meet two years ago, when I passed through Slavonia with that intention. This time I shall try not to miss you, and I will inform you in due time when we may meet.

Greetings to all, Yours Nikola

It would give me immense pleasure if you were
