The Tesla Memorial in Smiljan
It is planned to reconstruct Teslaâs birth place and its immediate surrounding so as to give them again the appearance they had in Teslaâs childhood in the mid-19th century.
According to the proposal of the Regional Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, Zagreb, the memorial area will cover the part of the village between the Vaganac brook and Bogdanic hill. The plans provide for the construction of approach paths, the regulation of the brook and the introduction of water-supply and sewage systems.
The small village cemetery by the church is to be put in order. The monument and the grave of the victims of fascism are to be placed with the assistance of the Federation of Associations of Fighters of the National Liberation War in Gospic.
Tourist Facilities in the Memorial Area
The plans for the memorial area around the birth place of Nikola Tesla in Smiljan provide for the construction of a building where visitors would be able to obtain basic information concerning the memorial area, especially as relating to the life and work of Nikola Tesla. A permanent exhibition will be arranged showing all the inventions for which the Yugoslav peoples and mankind as a whole are indebted to the great inventor.
Besides the exhibition room the building would contain the following: -
- souvenir shop
- keeperâs lodgings
- sanitary facilities
- store for equipment required for the maintenance of the memorial area
- small bar with soft drinks and milk products.
The building will harmonize with the landscape and the architecture of the neighbouring buildings.
âNikola Teslaâ hall in Gospic
âNikola Teslaâ Hall in Gospic is conceived as a centre for the popularization of the great scientist and his scientific achievements. It is to contain a museum with displays or Teslaâs works and other related exhibits and to serve as a place for scientific meetings, competitions of young inventors and other activities of the youth. The building would have a total area of about 2,000 square metres.
According to the general urban development plan of Gospic, âNikola Teslaâ Hall is to be erected on a site near Nikola Tesla Square and the new âLikaâ Hotel.
The building is planned to contain a vestibule with an exhibition hall, cloakroom, small store-room and tea kitchen; museum rooms, library, conference-rooms and workshops, lecture hall with a rostrum for the lecturer and the demonstration of experiments; film projection rooms, store-room for films, and utility rooms.
The exhibition hall is intended for the display of objects, models, scale models and apparatus which would present the development of the fields of engineering in which Nikola Tesla was active.
The lecture hall would be used for holding technical and scientific meetings and seminars and for the presentation of scientific and other films.
The workshop would be used for the maintenance of the exhibits and for other technical youth activities.
