CHAPTER TWELVE I was sitting in the president's office again. This time the day seemed brighter and the sun shone with more force, although so little time seemed to have passed since my first visit. I had placed a copy of my report on the table and Dr Schneider was now turning its pages in silence. After some time he looked up at me: 'Thank you, it's very clear.' He gathered the papers together again, tapped them on his desk and placed them back in their folder; the matter seemed closed to him. 'So you don't think it'll work?" 'No.' Schneider looked down at his desk, then smiled: 'You don't seem to think much of the theoretical explanation these people put together, Puharich wasn't it?" 'I'm quite certain it's wrong,' I said. - There were a few moments' silence between us, then I began again: 'But I'm still interested in the transmitter as a matter of fact. Tim Richardson is trying to build something along the lines of one of Tesla's patents.' I tried to catch Schneider's attention with this remark but he did not look up. Instead he reached for the file and began to search through my report absent-mindedly. 'Tesla was quite ahead of his time,' he said. 'I suppose you've read some of the biographies? I think you can see how he was led to this idea of power transmission by this interest in resonance and then his experiments with conduction in gases.' I tried again: 'If Richardson gets a Tesla tower built it may be worth taking a look at it. It could be interesting.' Schneider nodded. 'Richardson sounds like a responsible young man. I'd certainly like to look over his results when he begins his experiments.' 104
