CHAPTER FOURTEEN Several weeks later Andrew Microwski phoned to say that he was giving a party to celebrate CW Carter's retirement from the Canadian Senate. He wondered if I would be interested in attending, particularly as an added attraction would be the chance to meet Dr Puharich. The reception was held in a rooftop room at Andrew's apartment building. I arrived in the late afternoon to find the room already packed with guests and with few faces that I could recognize. In one corner Senator Carter was talking to a group of friends which included Andrew Microwski, so I went over and introduced myself. After a little conversation I wandered away and joined one of the smaller groups which had formed in the room. I had assumed that most of the guests would be political friends of the senator, newspaper people, aides, civil servants and the like, but, as I listened to their conversation, I realized that many of the invited guests, while having jobs within the Government in Canada and the U.S., had a common interest in esoteric and fringe science. One topic of discussion, for example, was the spruce budworm, a tiny insect responsible for the destruction of many spruce trees. A new technique for control had been developed by one of the guests, which involved taking a photograph of the worm (or was it the tree?) and putting the print inside a black box. I did not attend to the explanation too carefully, but it seemed that, by a process of meditation, 'radionic waves' emanated from the box and set to work upon the budworm. Later the conversation turned to that of a man who possessed secret esoteric knowledge which would enable him to integrate modern physics with the occult sciences. As if to disprove my earlier conjecture on the concentration of practitioners of esoteric arts within the room, I discovered that the group next to me were discussing the merits of seafoods from the Atlantic coast. 118
