CHAPTER SIXTEEN The talk of Tesla transmitters faded from the newspapers. PACE, however, was still active. On one occasion I was invited to a meeting at which a latter-day Tesla revealed an amazing invention which could be built with materials purchased at any hardware store'. It was supposed to tap into a source of 'cosmic energy' and, like Tesla's invention, it could transmit this power without wires. The inventor's claims were astounding; he could transmit a narrow beam of power of such intensity that it would burn a hole right through the moon. His device was certainly versatile for it could also be used to cure cancer. I remained to be convinced and, even though the instrument was the sort of thing that could be built for a few dollars' worth of pipe and wire, I was never to see it in operation. After an initial meeting, a demonstration was set up for which I obtained a movie camera and film. Only hours before the appointed time, my phone rang and I was told that the instrument had 'burned out' - no doubt it had overloaded itself with a liberal dose of 'cosmic energy"! Andrew Microwski's energies and enthusiasm continued unabated, for PACE was now producing an interesting newsletter containing articles on Nikola Tesla and reviews from the frontiers of science. From time to time, I would phone him for a chat. On the last occasion I spoke to him, he told me that the signals from Riga had stepped up in intensity during the US presidential campaign, then stopped altogether the day before Ronald Reagan was elected president. That certainly begs comment. Of Andrija Puharich I saw no more. Some time after my report for the National Research Council, he had gone into hiding. His house and laboratory had burned to the ground and Puharich could not be found. Later Andrew Microwski received a call from Puharich with the request to make no attempt to contact or trace him. 130
