CHAPTER SIXTEEN I was never really able to uncover the whole story of the intelligence operations which surrounded the work of Nikola Tesla and his latter-day followers but I did obtain a few hints. To begin with, after talking with the intelligence agent who had been involved with PACE, I had the feeling that the organization in itself was not the object of interest. PACE and the Tesla transmitter seemed more like a tasty piece of cheese and the intelligence agency took the form of a cat. The cat was not particularly interested in cheese but in the rats who crawled out of the woodwork to nibble. By keeping a low profile and hanging around the cheese, I had the feeling that a certain intelligence agency hoped to have a close look at a particular group of rats. A curious coincidence provided another piece of the puzzle. One afternoon I was sitting in my favourite restaurant talking to a friend of mine. The atmosphere was relaxed and my friend was talking about 'unexplained phenomena', and the various occult experiences she had come across in her life. Suddenly she stood up and waved at someone who had just entered the café. My friend whispered to me that the new arrival possessed unusual powers, then called out to her to come over to our table. The afternoon was warm and I had washed down a plate of hummus with several glasses of wine. Rather than join in the conversation, I listened, half asleep, to the talk about reincarnation, astral voyages and hidden knowledge. My friend mentioned how many important people had become involved in the paranormal, some of them quite high in the government. The visitor agreed and mentioned a group which fostered the development of psychic powers. I listened with half an ear until she mentioned the name of the man who was assisting her. She mentioned that he possessed considerable ability and was able to hypnotize people and lead them through past lives. The name she mentioned caused my mind to jump into gear. What on earth was an intelligence agent doing in the middle of a group of psychics? What did the paranormal powers of the mind have to do with Tesla transmission?
