CHAPTER SEVENTEEN The writer of the pamphlet, Martti Koski, claimed that he had been controlled for several months by microwave broadcasts. The details of his experiences were certainly bizarre - invisible voices speaking in Finnish, forbidden foods, mysterious faces, sadistic sexual experiments and elaborate indoctrination involving five fire engines. I had no knowledge of the writer but his report of 'voices' which controlled his behaviour and forced him to perform such acts as minor thefts and masturbation were not unlike the experiences of the mentally disturbed. 'Microwave Man', as he claimed he had been called, argued that security forces had learned the technique of controlling thought by means of microwaves. In the future, Governments, he said, would be able to control dissenters and other troublemakers. He agreed that his story appeared unbelievable, but cautioned that 'if there is, in your mind, the slightest chance what I have to tell holds some truth, doesn't it demand and deserve your further concern?', for ...consider the possibilities if microwave manipulation does work. If someone, with control over the technology, could disrupt or direct the workings of people's brains or even wipe some brains clear and insert other data. But, as I said, the story's over. And as for secret Government agencies controlling people's minds with microwaves? Well, I'm inclined to take the whole thing with a very strong pinch of salt. But you never know. Do you? 144
