IN SEARCH OF NIKOLA TESLA ISOLATED BODY EARTH Marconi transmitter as shown in his patent from 1896. Hertz transmitter is connected as proposed by Tesla. No resonance is used. At the beginning of twentieth century Tesla believed that he was far ahead of all others in developing wireless transmission, not only for messages but also for significant amounts of energy. In Colorado Springs he was at the peak of his research into radio transmission. He developed a vast transmitter and many receivers. It so happened that one day he measured signals generated by a receding storm. As he noticed the periodic variation of the signal he concluded that he was observing standing waves. Afterwards, Tesla proposed that the earth itself could be set into a resonant mode at frequencies 'smaller than twenty thousand per second, with the lowest six per second'. In a patent, filed subsequently in 1900, he said: 'For the present it will be sufficient to state that the planet behaves like a perfectly smooth or polished conductor of inappreciable resistance with capacity and self inductance uniformly distributed along the axis of symmetry of wave propagation and transmitting slow electrical oscillations 157 57
