A court decision in favor of Marconi was finally reversed in 1943 by the Supreme Court in favor of Tesla, and went almost unnoticed. Tesla also held all the basic patents on the alternate current electrical systems. This is now the basis of the world's supply of electricity, replacing the Edison direct current system. The development of a method of transmission of electricity without wires was too far ahead of its time, and was never fully developed. The famous Tesla coil has been the basis of the automobile ignition system for many decades. Tesla was also recognized for his researches in x-ray, electrical therapeutic devices, a revolutionary turbine design, highly efficient light bulbs, radio control, and a "death beam", to name a few. He even talked of having designed apparatus for interplanetary communication. At the stroke of midnight, between July 9th and 10th, 1856, in the village of Smiljan, Lika, Croatia, Nikola Tesla was born. During this time, Smiljan was under the jurisdiction of Austria-Hungary. It is now part of Croatia, Yugoslavia. His father was the Reverend Milutin Tesla, a priest of the Serbian Orthodox faith. His mother's name was Djouka, and she came from the household of Mandich. She was an inventor in her own right, creating many household devices. Early schooling was in Smiljan and Gospic, and upon reaching the age of fifteen, Nikola was sent to the Higher Real Gymnasium at Karlovac, Croatia. Until this time it was planned by his family that he become a minister. Tesla then experienced an extended illness, during which his father consented to the son's wishes to study in the field of mathematics and physics. At the age of nineteen, Tesla started his higher education at the Polytechnic School at Gratz, Austria. It was at Gratz that a demonstration of a Gramme dynamo exhibited the flaw of arcing brushes. The germ of the idea of a motor without a commutator was now created. Thus began the career of one of the world's greatest scientists. Responding to the need expressed by librarians and researchers throughout the country, John Ratzlaff and Leland Anderson have produced this exhaustive edition of an annotated bibliography of writings by and about Nikola Tesla (1856-1943). The period covered is from 1884 through 1978. Approximately 3,000 citations are included, arranged chronologically, plus a complete list of U. S. patents granted to Tesla, arranged by date of application. All earlier, lesser bibliographic efforts have been merged in this edition, with both North American and European sources cited. In addition to searching periodical directories and newspaper indexes, complete runs of 23 serials were examined for content; morgue files were examined for unindexed newspapers; Tesla's estate papers were searched for reference to obscure published articles; clipping files in major institutional and public libraries were examined. All articles, whether being found in multiple sources or having only. minor significance, have been cited. A short biography is included. The chronological arrangement will be an aid to the user in following the sequence of Tesla's life, scientific discoveries, and accomplishments. 230pp. Annotated Bibliography Address: 1372 Rosewood Avenue, San Carlos, California 94070 $18.00 Phone: (415) 494-1112 31
