Flow Meter
Tesla's flow meter, patented in 1921 under U.S. Patent 1,365,547, measured fluid velocity and quantity using a turbine-like rotor driven by flow, coupled to an indicator via magnetic or mechanical linkage. The design minimized obstruction with smooth passages, providing accurate, instantaneous readings resistant to pressure variations. A coiled spring and graduated dial ensured proportional display in units like gallons per hour.
Refining his turbine expertise, Tesla created a durable instrument for industrial and maritime use. It improved process control in pipelines and engines. Today, turbine flow meters dominate industries for precise, non-intrusive measurement in liquids and gases.
