A New Collection by Robert Underwood Johnson Published

A new volume of verse by Robert Underwood Johnson, associate editor of the Century Magazine, is announced for publication in the fall by the Century Company, with the title “Songs of Liberty and Other Poems.” Mr. Johnson’s first volume, “The Winter Hour and Other Poems,” was published in 1892 and was well received by the press. The new volume will include poems of considerable length of a patriotic character, entitled “The Voice of Webster” and “Hands Across the Sea,” beside a “Song of the Modern Greeks” and an “Apostrophe to Greece,” published last year and translated in part into modern Greek for the illustrated record of the Olympian games of 1896. The book will also contain a series of ballads and lyrics, entitled “Paraphrases From the Serbian,” versified by Mr. Johnson after literal translations by Nikola Tesla, the electrical inventor, from the originals by Zmai Iovan Iovanovich, who has been called the Serbian Longfellow and concerning whom Mr. Tesla writes a prefatory article. The ballads deal with the struggle of the Serbian against the oppression of the Turk, and thus fall appropriately under the title of the volume. There will also be miscellaneous poems in various keys. Among the lyrics are five which recently have had the honor of being set to music by Fraulein Adele aus der Ohe, the pianist and composer.
