Tesla's Broadcasting Plans

To the Editor of the Evening Post:

Sir — In your editorial of the 12th inst., referring to my statement relative to the wireless transmission of power which appeared in your issue of the 8th, you observe: "The day has long passed when such an announcement is received in anything more than a mildly questioning attitude." This reminds me of the reception accorded to my early publications on this subject.

Edison was wholly unprepared for the new ideas and more than once expressed himself adversely in regard to their practicability.

Almost all the experts, including Marconi, doubted the possibility of flashing signals, let alone power, through the natural media to great distances. The Italian said: "There is a wail of water between America and Europe through which the rays could not pass."

Eventually, however, communication between the two continents was effected. The apparatus with which the supposed miracle was performed remained a secret until a year or two later it became known (see the Electrician, London, February 27, 1909) that the Hertz appliances had been discarded and my own substituted.

Progress in the direction of my world system of broadcasting is greatly hampered by static interference, poor selectivity, inefficiency of transmitters and usa of extremely complex and expensive receivers. I am expecting to introduce soon new apparatus which will do away with all difficulties.
