Blow Up Wireless Tower

Government Demolishes Structure at Shoreham, Suspecting Its Use as Enemy Receiving Station.

RIVERHEAD, L. I., Wednesday. — Suspecting that alien enemies were using the big wireless tower at Shoreham to receive important information concerning the movement of United States war ships, steamships and troops the federal government this week had the tower demolished. Charges of dynamite were placed under the foundations and when these were exploded the tower collapsed. The presence of many strangers in the vicinity, some of whom were seen not far from the tower hastened its destruction.

The tower was about one hundred feet high and was erected by Nikola Tesla fifteen years ago for use in some of his electric experiments. Several years ago Mr. Tesla abandoned the tower and subsequently the property was sold at a foreclosure sale. At one time there was a very sensitive receiver at the tower, but that is said to have been removed years ago.
