Nikola Tesla is by nature a dreamer. Of the hundreds of electrical discoveries associated with his name, but few have been proved of practical use. It therefore remains to be seen whether or not there is any satisfactory basis to his claim that electricity may be transmitted across a continent, under an ocean, and even around the world, with only a small percentage of loss in power.
That Tesla is a discoverer and a scientist of great ability there can be no doubt, but there is also equal reason to believe that his sanguine and enthusiastic temperament frequently leads him to overstep the bounds of common sense.
By birth an Italian, by residence an American, he has spent his entire working life of forty-four years in investigating the phenomena of electricity. In appearance very youthful, he is possessed of a tremendous amount of physical and intellectual energy, and frequently works throughout a day and night without food or sleep.
He scorns the commercial side of his inventor's work, leaving the elaboration of his discoveries to others, and perhaps it is for this very reason his promises have so frequently failed of fulfillment.
