Nikola Tesla Inventions
The AND Logic Gate
While no individual patents were filed directly for this aspect of Tesla's 613,809 Method of and Apparatus for Controlling Mechanism of Moving Vessels of Vehicles patent, this invention is the analog equivalent of the digital circuit used in virtually all computers and modern electronics.
In order to fully control the boat, Tesla needed multiple channels. To make most efficient use of them, and to keep the system as compact as possible, he expanded his simple, single-channel receivers with a form of logic. For example, if Tesla's control system for the boat had two distinct transmitting frequencies, with this logic, he would expand his modes of operation from 3 to 4.
| State | Received Signals | |
|---|---|---|
| Channel 1 | Channel 2 | |
| Off | No | No |
| Action 1 | Yes | No |
| Action 2 | No | Yes |
| Action 3 | Yes | Yes |
This is the exact action of the 7408 AND logic gate which has been around since the 1960s.
Tesla was the first to incorporate and demonstrate this logic and called it "The art of individualization."
More information can be found about this invention in Leland Anderson's book on the subject.
