Scientist, 79, Produces Electricity by New Means

CALLS EINSTEIN WRONG ON RELATIVITY IDEA

Says Cosmic Rays Contain Tremendous Energy

New York, July 11 (U.P.). — Nikola Tesla, scientist, celebrated his 79th birthday yesterday by announcing three “revolutionary discoveries.”

Out of them, he said, may come a new means of communication, location of rich ore deposits, safe steering of ships in any weather, a new method of producing electrical current and a new conception of the universe that strikes squarely against relativity.

All cosmic rays emanate from suns and some particles that compose these rays travel at speeds 50 times greater than light (182,000 miles per second), he announced with unconcern for the relativists.

And, as if that were not enough for one day’s announcing, the scientist revealed “discovery of a method of producing direct electrical current by induction without using a commutator — something that electrical engineers since Faraday have agreed could not be done.”

Then, to climax a five-hour interview with newspapermen, the septuagenarian explained new methods and apparatus for transmitting mechanical energy to any terrestrial distance. For that feat he coined a new word, “tele-geodynamics.”

The transmission of mechanical energy is his greatest discovery in that field, Tesla said. Out of it will come “revolutionary changes when adapted to every-day things.”

Tesla does not propose the practical applications himself. That will be for the factual engineers. He made the discoveries — the rest is for others to work at. But he has some suggestions.

His new method of transmitting mechanical energy is much like amplifying waves that ripple over a pond when a stone is tossed into it. The waves will come from a “floating” cylinder and be amplified to traverse the earth. Just how those waves are started and finally released is his secret.

Ships equipped with receiving sets in harmony with the central transmitting station can determine their courses by the angle at which they cut these radial lines, Tesla explained. Scientists can send waves to the earth and tell what properties they pass through, opening new “oil, metal and mineral deposits of great value.”

Thousands of scientists vainly balked when they considered creation of a direct electrical current without use of a commutator in their generator, Dr. Tesla said, regarding his other mechanical discovery. “Now, incredible as it seems, I have found a solution of this old problem and I am able not only to produce a current in one direction without any commutator but I can make this current almost as steady and continuous as that from a battery.”

He has great respect for Albert Einstein, eminent German propounder of relativity theories, and others, but “they are wrong.” For more than 30 years Dr. Tesla has considered the cosmic rays and made sometimes expensive experiments.

“I am absolutely ignoring every one of the tenets of the relativity theory, which is to me just a mass of errors and deceptive ideas,” he said.

He told of experiments that “proved” to him emanation of positively charged particles from the suns of the universe, that these particles travel at terrific speeds faster than light, and that in them is a force which if harnessed would provide unlimited energy-power.

The sun, he determined, is charged to 215 billion volts. This enormous charge induces an electrical potential of two billion volts on the earth’s surface at any point in the equatorial region every 12 hours, he computed.

Cosmic particles striking one square foot would supply enough power for New York City if it could be harnessed, he said. He has made a cosmic-driven machine, but it is far from perfection.

One of the great fallacies regarding the cosmic ray has been its determination of intensity by gauging its ionizing power, Dr. Tesla asserted.

“I have discovered that the most energetic of the cosmos practically produce no cosmic rays and it is this part of the rays that carries the tremendous energy.”
