Tesla's Site Bought for a Central Station

Headquarters of Wireless Telegraphy to Be at Wardenclyffe, on Long Island.

It Is Claimed That He Has Put His System on Commercial Basis Already and Can Go Ahead.

Patchogue, L. I., August 6 — Nikola Tesla, the famous electrician, has closed a contract for the erection of a building and plant at Wardenclyffe on the Sound, nine miles east of Port Jefferson for the principal station of his wireless telegraphic system. The purchase includes 200 acres of land and Mr. Tesla says he will put up the largest building of its kind in the world for his experiments.

The main building will be 100 feet square and other buildings will also be erected. A 350 horse power electrical plant will be located in the building and the total cost of the plant and furnishings will be about $150,000.

Mr. Tesla says he expects to converse by electricity with all countries of the world from Wardenclyffe, which will be his main station.

Nikola Tesla was not at his office at 46 East Houston street to-day, but the clerk in charge confirmed the story of the purchase of land at Wardenclyffe for the site of a wireless telegraph station. He said that Mr. Tesla was the only person qualified to speak authoritatively either of the uses to which the station would be put, the part it would play in the system of wireless telegraphy with which the famous electrician hopes soon to encircle the globe or the stage to which he had advanced in the perfection of his system.

He did say, however, that Mr. Tesla had progressed so far with his invention that he had brought it to a commercially paying basis, and that the next few years, or, perhaps, months, would see the wireless telegraphic system opened as a regular means of communication.

The station which will be built at Wardenclyffe is to be the first one of a large number to be built in this and other countries. Though its main purpose will be to serve as a telegraph station, Mr. Tesla will also build on his land a laboratory and will continue his experiments in high voltage electricity.

Beside the wireless telegraph the inventor hopes soon to give to the world as a commercial commodity a new system of lighting by diffused light. If the statements of Tesla's man are to be believed Wardenclyffe, L. I., is soon to be the electrical center of the universe.
