Inventor Predicts New Discovery Will Make Possible Operation of Aircraft, Battleships and Machinery.

New York. March 10. — The dreams of industrial magnates, pioneers in aerial and maritime adventure, and scientists who have long sought a scheme for the transmission of energy by wireless are about to come true.

Nikola Tesla, veteran inventor in the radio field, broke a silence of years Saturday and announced the perfection of a system whereby he could transmit power without wires.

The realization of this dream has been the life aim of the pioneer inventor and for the last several years Professor Tesla has virtually secluded himself from the world, living almost a hermit's life to be able to devote all his energy to the development of his power transmission system.

Saturday, Professor Tesla came forth from his hermit-like seclusion and in a voice of ringing triumph proclaimed to the world his system, as comprising an electrical generator, which delivers its energy into the earth and stores it there, whence it can be unlocked by anyone having the proper "magical" electrical key.

By means of his system, the inventor declared that it would be possible to transmit power for the operation of ships and aircraft, for illumination and machinery, to the greatest terrestrial distance with smaller losses than are now experienced in metallic circuits.

In discussing the possibility of transmitting power by wireless in sufficient quantity for aircraft, ships and all kinds of machines, Professor Tesla said:

"Not only is this possible, but I am confidently expecting that by far the largest amount of energy will be transmitted in the future by this manner."

In addition to the transmission of power over long stretches by wireless the professor believes it will be possible to explode distant stores of explosives, collected in arsenals, warships or what not.

"It is true that my transmitter produces an effect all over the globe, but it is only force that is conveyed to every point, not energy. It is only the machine properly constructed and adapted that is capable of collecting the energy. To make this understandable to a non-technical man, suppose that the earth were a hollow reservoir into which water is forced by a pump. It does not require much scientific knowledge to perceive that the pressure will exist everywhere, yet no energy will be consumed.

"But the moment this reservoir is tapped, and the water is permitted to drive an engine, energy is derived from the pump. In my system the energy is released by something like a combination lock, and only those who have the combination can draw upon the source."

In addition to his other remarkable disclosures, the professor made the surprising declaration that so-called "hertzian waves" — a supposed medium for the transmission of wireless messages — do not exist, and that speech may be transmitted through the earth.

The veteran inventor declared that he would soon construct a plant for the purpose of demonstrating that power may be transmitted by wireless.
