Wireless Tower Blown Up

July 19th, 1917

Structure at Shoreham Demolished as Precaution.

RIVERHEAD, L. I., July 18. — Suspecting that alien enemies were using the big wireless tower at Shoreham to receive important information concerning the movement of United States warships, steamships and troops, the Federal Government this week had the tower demolished. Charges of dynamite were placed under the foundations and when these were blown out the tower collapsed. The presence of strangers in the vicinity, some of whom were seen not far from the tower, hastened the destruction.

The tower was about 100 feet high and was erected by Nikola Tesla sоmе fifteen years ago for use in some of his electric experiments. Several years ago Tesla abandoned the tower and subsequently the property was sold at foreclosure sale.
