Tips from the TMS

A newsletter circulated by the Tesla Memorial Society provided several interesting reports:

  1. State of NY Governor Mario Cuomo gave recognition to Nikola Tesla's 133rd birthday anniversary by issuing a proclamation. A portion of his remarks included “It is fitting that the people of New York join with the members of the Tesla Memorial Society to recognize Nikola Tesla.”
  2. Margaret Cheney, author of TESLA, MAN OUT OF TIME, is working on a second edition of her book.
  3. Henry Golas has left Columbia Pictures and is working on a Nikola Tesla film based on Margaret Cheney's book.

Power Plant Controversy

A controversy is raging in Niagara Falls in regard to a decision to tear down an old power house. Some citizens want the building saved as a museum while others have their own ideas as to what it should be. Herb Force thinks it should be preserved in its entirety as a tribute to Nikola Tesla whose inventions were responsible for harnessing the falls as a source of electric power. TCBA agrees that this building is an opportunity for authorities to establish a memorial devoted to the history of electrical development there.

Communications Newsletter Expanded

Herb Balfour, editor of the NORTHERN OBSERVER, informs us that his communications newsletter has been expanded to 28 pages per month. Herb's publication covers license free low frequencies (LOWFERS) as well as experimental medium frequencies (MEDFERS). In addition, his newsletter includes construction and technical data as well as membership information. The NORTHERN OBSERVER is the midwest and eastern equivalent to Jim Ericson's publication on the west coast (see NEWS NOTES, Volume 8, #4). Write Herb at 91 Elgin Mills Road West, Richmond Hill, Ontario, L4C 4MI, Canada.

No Mind Reader

TCBA members know that TCBA extends subscriptions by one issue for each new member brought in. However, I'm no mind reader and cannot credit anyone's account unless I am told the name of the person who was influential in bringing in the new subscriber. There are many out there who should have received one or more free issues but were never credited for their efforts. Sorry guys (and gals), my plasma ball only works on RF - not mental telepathy.

Kudos

Let us praise those who included a membership number when renewing their 1990 subscription. As for those who failed to do so, I am going to think of a way to get even. Any suggestions? I know that remembering your membership number is of little significance when compared to life's daily problems. Here's one suggestion. Cut your mailing label from a TCBA NEWS envelope and tack it on your desk or other handy place. I was never able to remember my typewriter ribbon number when shopping so I cut the label off from one of the boxes and stuck it in my wallet. It works!

Electric Radio

TCBA has received a sample issue of ELECTRIC RADIO, a 36-page publication devoted to “amateur radio operation and those who appreciate vintage radio equipment.” The magazine includes information regarding the modification, repair, and building of communications equipment. The cost is $18 per year for 12 issues. Write to Barry Wiseman, Electric Radio, P.O. Box 139, Durango, CO 81302. Please mention TCBA as it never hurts to make a new friend.

TCBA Index

TCBA receives numerous requests for a TCBA INDEX. An index to topics discussed in the NEWS is available for $3 from Jim Roddy, 2509 Lisa Drive, Waldorf, MD 20601

Tesla Coil Builders of Richmond: (Sparks N' Arcs)

TCBA received an attractive flyer advertising the Tesla Coil Builders of Richmond (Virginia). The group is headed by Richard Hull (262-9499 after 5 PM). The flyer proclaims “NO DUES, JUST FUN AND TALK - INFO., PARTS, SWAP, BUY & SELL, DEMOS, FUN!. Sounds like the kind of an organization I'd like to join. How far is it from Glens Falls, NY to Richmond, VA?

Stanford University Connection Needed

TCBA has been trying to obtain a photo from the University of Stanford (Palo Alto, CA) but without any success. What is needed is someone who has connections at the University or knows the right person(s) to contact. If anyone out there can help, please contact TCBA.
